Sleep is one of the major foundations of good health, but if your bedroom feels cold and uninviting, you may be ruining your chances for a deep, peaceful rest before your head even hits that pillow. A dull bedroom isn’t the end of the world, but if you want to carve out a little slice of heaven for yourself, it is absolutely one of the best places to start. There are so many ways that you can transform a dull bedroom into your dream space, starting by reading this guide:

Start with the Bed
A great way to start designing any space is to focus on the largest and most critical element in it. In your bedroom, that’s the bed. Before you worry about the headboard or design or anything else, however, it’s important to match the bed size with your room.
- You should have a minimum of 50 to 55cm at the end of your bed.
- Ideally, you’ll want a 60cm clearance on either side of your bed to allow for bedside tables and easy movement.
- If you have a wardrobe with swinging doors, you’ll need around 90cm clearance in front of it to access your clothes, and between 60 and 90cm in front of a chest of drawers.
Other considerations that will impact the layout and size of furniture in your room include heating vents or radiators, plugs, nooks, windows, and doors. Once you know these constraints, you can then map out the maximum size of the bed you can have, which is easy to fulfill with custom size ottoman beds that let you choose precise measurements.
Dressing the Bed
This is where you’ll want to be inspired by designers and mix and match ideas. Just remember: if you shop outside your area, sizes may differ. Buying a European-made bedframe could mean you’ll need a custom mattress to fit it.
Framing the Bed
You’ll next want to plan outwards by framing your bed. You can do this with side tables, rugs, or an above-bed canopy. There are so many fun and exciting bedroom design ideas out there that will allow you to truly tie in your bed and transform your space into a little oasis.
Using Colour
Colour is a powerful tool to really transform the space. If you want it to be sleepy and dreamy without being dark, opt for a tone like a soft peach. You can even use colour drenching (where you paint everything, including the trim and ceiling, the same colour) or a technique known as two-tone painting, where the trim and ceiling are painted a darker or lighter shade than your walls. Your soft furnishings, including rugs, bedding, or even a chair, should contrast with those tones, or blend in – your choice!
Note: Go beyond colour and be bold with patterns! These can add essential pops of interest to your bed, walls, or other soft furnishings.
Invest in Your Lighting
Lighting can and will make a space feel different, which is why it’s another key investment area for your bedroom. Skip the overhead light and change it out for a dramatic chandelier or hanging light that suits our personal style. Invest in lamps that complement your design idea, and, most importantly, understand that lights come in a range of tones. In general, you’ll likely want a warmer tone light between 1800K for a red, romantic light, to 2200K for a cosy atmosphere.
