Standard Brick Size | Standard Sizes Of Bricks

Bricks are one of the most commonly and widely used building materials. In this article, we will briefly discuss the standard sizes of bricks in different countries.

What Is Brick?

Bricks are rectangular (cuboid) shaped blocks usually made of clay. Bricks are small, cheap, and relatively easy to handle. Bricks are used as a replacement for stone which is more expensive and difficult to handle. There are also many alternatives of bricks available in the market these days, such as AAC Blocks, concrete blocks, etc.

Bricks are placed in a particular style so that the required thickness and shape of the masonry element can be constructed. It is known as brick bond. The joints are filled with mortar of cement and sand.

Bricks are used to construct masonry structures and building elements such as walls. Bricks are durable and can be extremely strong in compression. Using bricks, it is possible to construct complex-shaped structures also.

Why Do Bricks Have A Standard Size?

According to their building standards and codes, all countries have standardized a fixed size for bricks. Bricks are made in standard sizes for better workability. So that mason can easily lift and place them in proper position. For large size bricks, it will be hard to burn them properly.

If the brick is too small in size, then the number of bricks required will be more and it is difficult to produce a huge quantity of bricks every day. So, due to such reasons, a standard size is fixed by the building standards of each country.

Let’s have a look standard sizes of bricks in different countries.

Standard Brick Size In India

In India, clay bricks are mostly used. The standard size of clay bricks is 190 mm x 90 mm x 90 mm without mortar and 200 mm x 100 mm x 100 mm with mortar, which is known as nominal size.

The different types of bricks have different sizes. Let us explore the standard sizes of bricks used in India.

1. Modular Bricks:

These are the most commonly used bricks in India. Any brick, which is of the same uniform size, standardized by the Bureau of India Standards (BIS) is known as a modular brick.

Modular bricks are economical to manufacture because of locally available material and the standard size. According to BIS, the standard size of modular bricks without mortar is 190 mm x 90 mm x 90 mm.

2. Non-Modular Bricks:

The Standard size of non-modular bricks is 230 mm x 110 mm x 75 mm.

3. English Size Bricks:

The standard size of English bricks is 230 mm x 115 mm x 75 mm.

4. Conventional Bricks:

The standard size of conventional bricks is 230 mm x 110 mm x 110 mm. There are many other sizes of bricks that are locally available. But for any size and type of bricks, the weight should not exceed 3 kg.

Dimension Tolerance For Bricks

We know that it is not possible to produce each and every brick at accurate dimensions. So, there are tolerances on the dimensions of bricks. They are mentioned below:

1. Dimension Tolerance For Modular Bricks:

  • Length of bricks = 190 mm, Tolerance = +/- 4 mm
  • Width of brick = 90 mm, Tolerance = +/- 3mm
  • Height of the Brick = 90 mm, Tolerance = +/- 3mm

2. Dimension Tolerance For Non-modular Bricks:

  • Length of brick = 230 mm, Tolerance = +/- 4 mm
  • Width of the brick = 110 mm, Tolerance = +/- 3 mm
  • Height of brick = 70 mm, Tolerance = +/- 3 mm

Standard Size of Bricks In Other Countries

We already learned about the standard size of bricks used in India. Here we will learn about the standard size of bricks used in other countries.

Various countries with their standard size of bricks are listed below:

  1. USA: 194 mm x 92 mm x 57 mm.
  2. UK: 215 mm x 102.5 mm x 65 mm.
  3. Australia: 230 mm x 110 mm x 76 mm.
  4. Newzeland: 230 mm × 70 mm × 76 mm
  5. Bangladesh: 241 mm x 114 mm x 70 mm

  16. South Africa: 222 mm x 106 mm x 73 mm.
  17. Denmark: 228 mm x 108 mm x 54 mm.

Dimensions Of Frog In Brick

Frog is a depression provided on the top side of a brick. Frog is provided along the length of a brick. It is provided to reduce the self-weight of the brick and to enhance the bonding with mortar.

The following are the dimensions of a Frog:

  • Length of a frog = 100 mm
  • Width of frog = 40 mm
  • Depth of a frog = 10 to 20 mm
