Mivan Shuttering Formwork – Advantages & Disadvantages

What Is Mivan Shuttering?

Mivan shuttering is a modern-day innovative formwork technique. Mivan formwork is a type of aluminium formwork. It is a fast-paced technique, which enables speedy construction on site.

Mivan formwork was introduced and manufactured in the year 1990 by a European construction company called Mivan Company Ltd. Mivan formwork is used widely leaving behind the traditional formwork.

When compared to traditional shuttering, Mivan shuttering has proved to be an economical option when used for large projects and more repetitions.

The installation and removal process of Mivan shuttering is easier than the conventional formworks. Hence it enables a speedy assembly of formwork on site. The tedious and complex labour work is also eliminated.

Mivan shuttering is highly durable and provides good strength. Mivan shuttering, despite being popular around the world, is not used much in India. It is very popular and extensively used in the Gulf countries.

There is no need for masonry components like blocks or bricks for the construction of masonry elements like a wall while using the Mivan formwork.

All the structural components such as walls, columns, slabs, and beams can be made out of concrete itself, hence increasing the strength, durability, and soundness of the whole structure.

Also, the shuttering when removed, results in a high-quality finished concrete component. When these components are constructed using Mivan formwork, their quality is so great that it invalidates the need for a plaster coat on them.

How Mivan Shuttering Works?

Like conventional shuttering, a stream-lined procedure is to be carried out and followed for the construction of Mivan shuttering as well. The step-wise procedure of Mivan formwork is as follows:

  1. Setting – up the wall reinforcing steel
  2. Placing the formwork
  3. Casting structural elements with concrete
  4. Deshuttering the formwork

Steps In Mivan Shuttering Construction

1. Setting–up The Wall Reinforcing Steel

This is the first and foremost step in the procedure. To mold the structure, wall reinforcing steel (rebar) is used. This steel mesh is developed in the manufacturing unit itself according to the shape and size of the structure, like the precast concrete elements. Once the steel mesh is ready, it is brought to the site and erected in its place.

2. Placing The Formwork

Once the steel mesh is erected, the shuttering plates or the forms are placed. These shuttering are pre-integrated with openings for doors and windows also.

According to the position, they are placed by labours. To join forms with each other, pin and wedge system is used. Mivan formwork is easy to handle hence speedy construction is possible.

3. Casting Structural Elements With Concrete

After the formwork is placed, the concrete is poured into the formwork to form a strong and rigid concrete structure. This is similar to concreting done in the traditional formwork method itself.

4. Deshuttering The Formwork

When the concrete gains a certain amount of strength and becomes rigid, the deshuttering of formwork is done. As we learned that Mivan formwork is easy to handle, the deshuttering can be done without much complexity.

The concrete structure is ready with a superior quality finish. So it does not require any plastering on it too.

Difference Between Mivan Shuttering And Traditional Shuttering

Advantages Of Mivan Shuttering

i) Mivan formwork is erected in a relatively lesser period, hence speedy construction and deshuttering are possible. Also, the erection can be done by unskilled labours.

ii) Mivan formwork is made up of aluminium alloy. So it is highly durable.

iii) The structure built with mivan formwork is highly resistant to seismic forces.

iv) It yields a better quality of finished concrete. Hence it eliminates the need of plastering the structure.

v) All the structural elements are constructed of concrete, so there is no need to use masonry blocks or bricks. As a result, the strength of concrete is much higher than masonry components.

vi) Uniformity is seen in the structural components.

vii) It can be used a minimum of 200 to 300 times.

Disadvantages Of Mivan Shuttering

i) The initial cost of mivan formwork is higher. Hence not suitable for small projects.

ii) There are fewer scopes of modification in structural components because the mivan shuttering is tailored according to the requirement of the structure.

iii) Construction joints should be joined properly to prevent the leakage of slurry.

iv) Due to box-type construction shrinkage cracks are likely to form. However, this problem can be prevented by reducing the heat hydration using fly ash or using control strips on the structure.

v) The finished structure may have noticeable finishing lines on the concrete surface because of small-sized components.

vi) The heat of hydration is comparatively higher due to the shear walls.

vii) Skilled workers are required to ensure that the alignment, pouring of concrete, etc. is properly done within the time.
